Η Ολλανδία επέλεξε την πρώτη της συμμετοχή για την ιστορική, εναρκτήρια Eurovision του 1956 μέσα από έναν εθνικό τελικό που ονομάστηκε Nationaal Songfestival. Η διαδικασία αυτή, που διοργανώθηκε από τον δημόσιο ραδιοτηλεοπτικό φορέα NTS στις 24 Απριλίου 1956, είχε πολύ συγκεκριμένους και ιδιαίτερους κανόνες, καθώς έπρεπε να προσαρμοστεί στις απαιτήσεις της πρώτης εκείνης Eurovision.
Στον τελικό διαγωνίστηκαν 3 ερμηνευτές, οι οποίοι μοιράστηκαν συνολικά 8 τραγούδια (κάθε καλλιτέχνης είπε από 2 ή 3 κομμάτια). Ο νικητής δεν κρίθηκε από κριτική επιτροπή, αλλά από το τηλεοπτικό κοινό, το οποίο ψήφισε στέλνοντας ταχυδρομικές κάρτες!
